$1 coins can last for thousands of transactions, whereas dollar bills only last 18-22 months on average. Every dollar bill costs approximately 4.2 cents to produce. We print over 16 million dollar bills a day. According to the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, if America gets rid of its $1 bill and replaces it with a dollar coin, the U.S. will save $5.5 billion on printing costs over the next 30 years.
