According to the New York Times (Sept. 20), US Soldiers in Afghanistan are instructed to not report the widespread rape of Afghan boys by Afghan commanders. This abuse is directly observed by our soldiers, yet they must remain silent, to preserve harmonious relations with the Afghans. Those who speak out are removed from duty.
The outrage expressed in the comments accompanying the article is a loud cry of indignation, disbelief, and disgust. No American should be required to abet such blatant human rights violations. Our soldiers are expected to represent American values and to behave honorably, wherever they are stationed. In this instance, they are asked to dishonor their uniforms and their consciences.
Mr. Obama, instruct your Generals to change this policy immediately.
