Stop Recidivism

The definition of correction is “the treatment of offenders through a system of penal incarceration, rehabilitation, probation, and parole, or the administrative system which these are effectuated.” The ultimate goal is to reintegrate individuals into society. This goal is a theory in itself. Former inmates return to communities, which are often impoverished and disenfranchised neighborhoods with few social support and persistently high crime rates, facing numerous challenges and temptations that initially landed them in prison. The recidivism rate is estimated at 66%. The correction system is failing to address the real problem in inmates’ committing crimes. The correctional system needs to provide newly released inmates with the necessary tools to successful reintegrate into society.
