We are not a theocracy! In 1956 however, the Senate violated the first amendment and inserted the words "under God" into the pledge of allegiance. This was done at the height of the Cold War, and was intended to separate us morally from the communists (who were considered to be more atheistic).
To this day the the pledge forces a prayer upon children and teachers. In some states it is mandatory to recite the pledge. And even in those where it is voluntary, it still encourages the persecution of Atheists. As a student last year I refused to say under God. As a result I was confronted and insulted by both my teachers and peers. I refuse to be indoctrinated in school.
I hereby petition to: Return the pledge to it's pre-1956 version. It has the same lyrics, but without the words: under god.
