Even in 2014 we still see schools defining students with special needs by their disability; this practice is deplorable.
And it needs to stop.
How often have you seen school signs that identify their students by their disability?
Among the offenders: American School for 'the Deaf,' Florida School for 'the Deaf and Blind,' California School for 'the Blind,' The Hadley School for 'the Blind.'
It's clear this list can go on and on with school names labelling students by their disability, while 'regular' schools are defined as 'elementary' or 'middle schools.'
Calling a group of people 'the blind' or 'the autistic,' is not only archaic but it's oppressive and can be likened to branding--recognizing people WITH disabilities as less than individual.
Help stop this branding of children.
