During the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, the National Guard used large enlistment bonuses to entice veterans to reenlist and go to war. Investigations have revealed widespread fraud by California National Guard officials under pressure to meet enlistment quotas. Now over 10 years later, 10,000 veterans are being slapped with interest charges, wage garnishments and tax liens if they refuse to pay this money back, placing those veterans under severe financial hardship. Please pass a law negating this "overpayment" that is punishing veterans who put their lives at risk in the service of this country. They did not create this situation and they fulfilled their end of the bargain.
