Stop garnishing wages to such an extent that people cannot survive or take care of their children and end debtors prison

Created by A.L. on October 19, 2015

Up to 50% of your disposable earnings may be garnished to pay child support if you are currently supporting a spouse or a child who isn't the subject of the order. If you aren't supporting a spouse or child, up to 60% of your earnings may be taken. An additional 5% may be taken if you are more than 12 weeks in arrears.

So why do people work under the table? If minimum wage cannot afford to pay the rent anywhere in the USA, imagine trying to survive while only getting 35% of your actual pay?

Incarcerating people who have fallen behind only increases the burden on the tax payers while providing no relief for the children.

It is time to set real limits: 25% of pay and then an additional 15% if there are arrears of any kind. And no longer will we support debtors prison.
