The US government is still subsidizing tobacco farms with taxpayer money, even now decades after we have known that tobacco is deadly. It makes no sense to give taxpayer money to farmers to grow tobacco, and then tax the tobacco for being unhealthy when it is sold.
Furthermore, most of the subsidy money given to US farms is given for the production of soy, corn and other animal feed crops that have helped to keep junk food and fast food cheap, while the prices of fresh fruit and vegetables continues to climb.
The government needs to stop subsidizing the foods that are killing the American poor, and start subsidizing healthy options so that the average American can afford them.
