Stop suppressing democratic movements around the world

Created by J.M. on December 20, 2012

The United States has been suppressing democratic movements and governments around the world for over a century. One of the most recent cases was the overthrow of the democratically-elected President of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, in 2004. Other notable cases were the U.S.'s support for fascists in Spain under Franco, Greece under its military junta, and Chile under Pinochet. The regime in Bahrain is shooting its people in the streets right now as the U.S. sends over weapons. The dictatorships in Tunisia and Egypt were backed by the U.S. for decades. The United States cannot claim to stand for freedom and democracy while supporting fascists and dictators. Human freedom is a universal quality that should not be treated as a chess piece for global hegemony.
