Tar-sand oil (or oil-sands) are a product that is derived from the removal of the earth's surface, typically in virgin Boreal forest, for the extraction of bitumen from the soil. This extraction has a higher rate of waste and embedded energy consumption than drilled wells. The refinement of bitumen into oil also incurs a higher rate of waste and embedded energy than traditional crude. The removal of habitat affects, among many species, pollinators that the world depends on for food production. This threat to our health and security could be diminished by the solidarity of our president to stand with the many states that have already chosen to limit or ban oil derived from Canadian tar-sand.
