Americans living overseas currently have to file and pay US Federal taxes, even though they do not use government services and are also taxed by the countries in which they reside. The US is the only country in the world that taxes its own citizens living overseas, creating unfair scenarios abroad where an American being paid a similar salary as his/her colleagues has a substantially lower after-tax income. Some countries have avoidance of double taxation treaties with the US, but many do not. A recent law passed by the US Congress called FATCA also imposes significant reporting requirements on Americans overseas. Meant to go after rich people hiding assets, it instead harasses middle-class Americans with mountains of yearly paperwork. Let's bring some fairness and tax only US residents.
