The detriment of tobacco use to U.S. Military personnel readiness is well documented in the health literature. Tobacco use causes death, illness and disability in service members, their family members, and veterans. Those health consequences become the responsibility of the Military Health System and Veterans Administration. Yet, the DoD supports the supply of inexpensive tobacco through the Exchange and Commissary system. The taxpayers are subsidizing and encouraging tobacco use, then paying for the resulting death and illness. Dr. Woodson, Assistant Secretary Health Affairs made decreasing tobacco use a priority in 2012. Secretary Panetta and Under Secretary Rooney, support better health in service members and lower healthcare costs; empower them to abolish military tobacco resale.
