As a form of entertainment, the animal circus is beyond archaic. Attendance has dwindled since their heyday, and the United States is one of few developed nations that still permits the use of wild animals in circuses. Investigative reports shine light on the treatment of these animals in captivity, treatment that ranges from being kept in cages too small in transport to the use of bullhooks on elephants. The economic impact of putting these animals in a better situation is negligible, but it is a necessary step in the right direction. As a nation, we are starting to lag behind our peers in terms of protecting the animals who were here before our cities and cars. It's time we started treating these animals with the respect they deserve.
