Stop the toxic demolition of the Asarco smokestacks and preserve them as historical landmarks.

For over a century, the American Smelting and Refining Co. processed metals, including toxins, at its site on the border of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. For decades, the smelter's smokestacks have marked the skyline of these border cities releasing toxins into the air. On April 13, 2013, the Asarco Site Custodial Trust will demolish these smokestacks using TNT, which will explode even more toxins into the air. The Trust will then bury any waste material underground, thus contaminating the groundwater. The longterm effects of such a demolition are unknown as is how far reaching into the West Texas region or into such states as New Mexico or Chihuahua, Mexico. Let's move to designate the smokestacks as historical landmarks and save the region from further environmental damage.
