The Wilderness Act was passed in 1964. Today, there are 762 wilderness areas in 44 states comprising nearly 110 million acres. Alaska, California, Arizona, Idaho and Washington are home to the biggest chunks of wilderness. Nearly 12 million people visit Wilderness areas each year–you just can’t do so on a bike. Bikes were not banned until '84. No facts were used to support this ban. There were very few off road type bikes even made at that time. With no facts to support claims of trail damage, environmentalist with good intentions pushed to change the Wilderness Act wording from "Motorized" to "Mechanized". The BLM and other Govt orgs followed the Forest Services lead and now millions of individuals are not allowed to enjoy the outdoors. We know how to share the trail, allow us to ride.
