It has been brought to our attention that physical restraints, seclusion, shock therapy and confinement are being used as forms of "treatment" on adults and children with autism in treatment facilities and schools. Judge Rotenburg Center in Massachusetts utillizes shock treatments, and only received disciplinary action after a child suffered severe burns. This is completely unnecessary. Restraints should only be used if the individual poses an immediate threat to her/himself or others, and for the minimum amount of time necessary. What kind of country do we live in where it is acceptable to subject a human being to such things against his/her will? Please remember that individuals with disabilities, verbal or not, should have the same human rights as all Americans.
