Stop using rivers as urinals, by demanding that EPA correct essential water pollution test (BOD5) that caused the failure of the Clean Water Act (CWA). By applying this test incorrectly, EPA ignored 60% of the pollution in sewage Congress intended to ‘treat’ and ignored all the pollution caused by nitrogenous (urine and protein) waste in sewage. This waste not only exerts an oxygen demand (like fecal waste), but also is a fertilizer for algae, thus contributes to eutrophication, resulting in dead zones. Since this type of pollution (EPA calls nutrients) is mainly blamed on the runoffs from cities and farms, the correction of this test will prevent any more public money from being wasted on new programs, without first implementing the CWA as intended and promised 40 years ago.
