Stop the Weather Channel from the ridiculous practice of naming winter storms.

For the Winter of 2012-13, The Weather Channel has decided to put hype and media sensation ahead of practical weather forecasting by naming Winter Storms. This policy has caused unnecessary anxiety, hype and has made a mockery of the weather forecasting industry. The Weather Channel. As witnessed by naming the recent blizzard "Nemo", the Weather Channel has elevated winter storms to the level of Hurricanes, creating unwarranted fears and anxieties for those affected by these storms. The hype has also led to ridiculous runs on gasoline, food, etc. leading up to the storm. We call on the Obama Administration to give NOAA and the National Weather Service the sole authority to name weather systems in the United States and direct the Weather Channel to end their self-serving naming practices.
