Gasoline price spikes hurt the economy. So does unnecessary and burdensome regulations. America needs to build more oil refineries, and drill more for oil. This way we are less dependent on dictatorships in the Middle East, and we can buy some time until renewable fuels are cost efficient. To do this we need to streamline and gut any redundant regulations and unnecessary ones to give companies more incentive to drill and also to build refineries. This will create jobs and lead to energy independence.
