Strengthen accountability of airlines for delays, canceled flights, and denied boarding

Created by M.V. on April 25, 2016

Federal requirements regarding the responsibility of airlines in cases of delays, cancelled flights, and overbooking (as described at https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/fly-rights) are much too weak.

As long as airlines are not held fully accountable for failures to deliver on their commitments, they will have little incentive to limit the risks of delays, cancelled flights and denied boarding. Stronger compensation requirements are vital to ensuring reliable air transportation in the US.

In this matter, the federal administration should follow the example of the European Union (see http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/passenger-rights/air/index_e...). If arriving on time is within airlines’ control in Europe, how come it is beyond airlines’ control in the US?
