Strengthen the laws prohibiting domestic abusers from owning firearms.

Created by L.A. on November 10, 2012

Federal law currently prohibits those who have been convicted of "misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence" from owning firearms. This is a great step in the right direction. Victims of domestic violence are three times as likely to be murdered by their abusers if there is a gun in the home.

"Misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence" as currently defined must have an element of force. In many states, this does not include violations of domestic abuse restraining orders.

We believe the federal government should prohibit gun ownership by those who violate domestic abuse injunctions, particularly repeat offenders.
