Strike Christopher Columbus Day as a national holiday in the United States.

Created by J.H. on November 16, 2015

This petition seeks to remove Christopher Columbus Day as a U.S. national holiday. The historical Christopher Columbus was a terrible, soulless human being that participated in countless crimes against indigenous Caribbean Islanders including rape, enslavement, torture, murder, and genocide. Historical estimates suggest that he and his troops murdered several hundred thousand people, possibly rendering some native tribes extinct. His only claim to fame is having "discovered" the "new world," which is historically false as ample evidence exists to show that the "new world" was both already inhabited and had been previously visited by other European mariners. The celebration of this holiday is archaic and offensive. It should be removed from our list of national holidays immediately.
