In 1966, the phrase "professional football leagues" was added to Section 501(c)6 of 26 U.S.C., the Internal Revenue Code. The NFL and AFL had not yet merged and the government aided their growth by allowing them to not pay taxes. In 2012, the National Football League generated $9.5 billion dollars in revenue and paid $0 in taxes because this exemption is still on the books.
The President and the American people need to be aware of this loss of tax revenue at a time when the social safety net is being shredded in favor of billionaires.
