We ask that our government subsidize a core "brown bag" of foods, so low income families can choose/afford healthier foods. Healthy foods are often the most expensive foods in the grocery store. A loaf of white bread containing high fructose corn syrup costs $ .99, but the loaf of whole grain bread, without corn syrup costs closer to $4.00.Whole grain flour costs more than refined, bleached flour.Foods rich in Omega-3s, such as salmon, flax seed, almonds, avocados are all pricy items. Iceberg lettuce(no nutritional value) is about $ .99/head, but healthy dark green spinach and romaine are 2-3 times more expensive. The "no added sugar" variety of peanut butter is twice the price of the sugary peanut butter.
Government should work with food suppliers to make selected healthy foods AFFORDABLE.
