In Canada, Theresa Spence, chief of the Attawapiskat First Nation, started a hunger strike almost two weeks ago in an attempt to arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper over recent federal legislation that she and other aboriginal leaders say violate long-standing treaties, including the Bill C-45 recently signed into law that removes environmental protections nationwide and jeopardizes First Nations rights and communities.
This is not just an aboriginal issue. The legislation threatens the way of life of all Canadians (and Americans who live downstream) who wish to drink water, swim in lakes, breathe the air and have a say in the way they live their lives. This movement is getting support around the world and growing every day.
