Washington owned slaves. An undisputed fact. He bought and sold humans, he beat them and on occasion divided families by sale as a form of punishment. Some have argued that because he left provisions in his will to free his slaves after his wife died he should be forgiven these trespasses. That because he was instrumental in the creation of a country founded on principles he himself could not honor, he should be forgiven these trespasses. The fact remains, Washington was a slave owner. So, in light of recent events that have proven our country's collective failure to address the racial realities of our past, I propose we replace Washington on the one dollar bill with Harriet Tubman. A "Moses," an abolitionist, a soldier, and a suffragette.
