The electoral college has been in place in our nation since 1787, and even then it was contested by some of our founding fathers. We contended that this system no longer serves its orginal purpose and in fact impairs democracy, and thus should be abolished.
The electoral college was originally created to give power to smaller states and because communication was difficult in the 18th and 19th centuries. In our connnected and more unified modern nation, these reasons are no longer relevant.
A common idea running through the minds of U.S. citizens is that our vote does not count. If an indvidual does not live in a swing state, this belief rings true. The electoral college favors swing states, discourages voter turnout, encourages a two-party system, and favors less populous states
