Our current plurality voting system (aka first-past-the-post) is essentially the worst voting system. Mathematicians and political scientists have known this for centuries. Consider this simplified example of voter preferences:
Percent of voters - 1st > 2nd > 3rd preference
35% X > Z > Y
33% Y > Z > X
32% Z > Y > X
If all factions vote for their sincere favorite candidate, then X wins with 35% of the vote. But a huge 65% majority of the voters prefer both Y and Z to X. Candidate X is clearly not the most representative of the electorate's overall preferences.
According to an objective economic metric called Bayesian Regret, voters could roughly DOUBLE their expected satisfaction with election outcomes by upgrading to a superior system.
