Support and amendment to the Health Care Bill to require insurance companies to protect transgender people

Created by K.G. on July 16, 2013

Currently there are no guidelines protecting transgender people from being discriminated against by their insurance companies. In most states it is not illegal for an insurance company to drop a transgender person simply because they are transgender. The vast majority of insurance companies also do not cover transgender surgeries including sex reassignment surgery for transgender males and females and mastectomies for transgender males. This leaves transgender people to pick up the cost of surgeries that cost thousands of dollars that will greatly improve their mental health and well being and is supported by many health organizations.
