Solar Roadways (http://www.solarroadways.com/intro.shtml) is a small US-based company that has developed hexagonal solar panels that can be fitted together to create roads, sidewalks, playgrounds, and the like.
They are strong enough to have trucks drive on them. They have LED lights built in so they can be used to create lane lines. They have a heating element to melt snow.
Covering just 10,000 square miles of surface area with these panels would produce enough energy to power the entire United States.
This is EXACTLY the kind of innovative company our government should be supporting. They are currently crowdsourcing to raise $1 million. Why not have our government take on that burden? It would solve our infrastructure issues! And think of all the jobs it would create!
