The plurality voting system (aka "first past the post", aka "winner take all) currently used in elections suffers from many disadvantages . Among them:
-the "spoiler effect". Votes are split between ideologically similar parties, to the advantage of their opposition. A candidate supported by a minority of voters can win if his opposition is split.
-Voters are forced to vote tactically for major parties even if they prefer a third party.
-Voters who did not support the winner have no impact.
Among the systems that do not suffer from these disadvantages are approval voting, instant run-off, condorcet, and range voting.
These methods would better represent minority viewpoints and allow voters to express support for multiple candidates, removing the need to vote tactically.
