We are writing to you to urge you to sign H.R. 3464, the Sandra Day O’Connor Learning Act of 2011. It is imperative that this act be made law in order to guarantee the perpetuity of our vibrant democracy. Only through civic education can citizens of America acquire the knowledge necessary to become active participants in our democracy.
There is a major educational disparity that provides sufficient evidence to support the signing of this act. For example, only one third of Americans can name all three branches of government and one third cannot name any.
Without informed and knowledgeable citizens, we cannot have a truly democratic society. We want education that emphasizes civic duty and combats apathy. Thus, we strongly encourage you to sign H.R. 3464.
