The Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision gives corporations, including even foreign corporations, the right to make unlimited, independent expenditures in support of candidates for Federal office. The rationale for this decision is that corporations are "persons" for purposes of the first amendment's "free speech" clause.
As the dissent (by four of the five justices) in the case shows, corporations "may be managed and controlled by nonresidents, their interests may conflict in fundamental respects with the interests of eligible voters. The financial resources, legal structure, and instrumental orientation of corporations raise legitimate concerns about their role in the electoral process."
We need to reduce the power of corporations on the political process.
