The town of Nome, Alaska is not connected to the state’s road or rail network and it would be more beneficial for the city, state, and nation if it was.
A road to Nome has been in the planning for decades and has gained many supporters as well as opponents. The road would be around 500 miles long and is currently estimated to cost around $3 billion.
There are already trails connecting Fairbanks to Nome that can be traveled by 4-wheelers, snow machines, or dogsleds, but the construction of a road would open up more of the state for mining and timber development.
The road would connect several villages and towns along the way, giving them easier acces to valuable resources. It would also increase our nation’s presence and sustainability in the Arctic region.
