Witnesses testifying in court, or before Congress, do so under oath. Taxpayers sign their returns under penalty of perjury. Truth in political debates is at least as important, yet these debates are marred by candidates charging each other with lying. To improve our politics, and decrease rancor, the President should support an Honest Debate Act creating a mechanism for candidates for President, Vice President, or Congress in primary and general elections to debate under oath, subject to penalty of perjury.
