There are currently five unemployed people for every job available, resulting in millions of long term unemployed. Until and unless the jobs crisis improves, the federal government should repeat the experience of the Depression and directly hire the long term unemployed for public works. This would alleviate suffering but also enable many jobs to be done that need doing across the country.
