Representative John Conyers Jr. has long championed a bill in support of a Commission (HB40) that would study the effects of slavery, Jim Crow, "separate but equal" and other official policies and tolerated practices that have devastated the black community during the history of America. Recently Ta-Nehisi Coates in The Atlantic has made an eloquent and compelling argument for the study of reparations, citing Conyers' languishing bill. A study, sanctioned by the political branches of government would be an important official step to show that the United States is ready and mature enough to deal with the failures of its past on equal footing with its successes. The work of the commission itself could bring us closer to our own truth and reconciliation with and repudiation of White Supremacy
