Yasuni National Park in Ecuador is perhaps the most biodiverse place on Earth. The ITT (Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini) Block is mostly unexplored rainforest, home to several indigenous nations, and contains an estimated 850 million barrels of untapped Amazon crude. Ecuador President Correa has offered to leave the ITT Block untouched indefinitely in exchange for $3.6 billion dollars, and preserve this incredible place.
The U.S. government needs to step up and support Ecuador in this effort, before drilling destroys Yasuni ("In forests impacted by oil development, perhaps 90 percent of the species around denuded sites die." National Geographic article, by Scott Wallace).
I suggest that the United States pays the full amount, or pays half and asks the European Union to do the same.
