While members of the House of Representatives are time-limited in their debate of bills, members of the Senate have no such restriction.
This has allowed Senators to debate as long as they are able to continue talking. This allows one Senator to effectively hijack the debate process until his or her demands are met. This is inherently destructive to democracy and undermines the process of bills becoming law. The only way to effectively counter a filibuster is by invoking cloture, which can only be done by a supermajority of Senators.
This exploitation of a loophole in the rules of the Senate allows Senators to hold our democracy hostage to their interests. This practice should end and this tactic should be abolished by all parties in Congress.
