We, the undersigned, call upon the Obama Administration to vocally support fairness and honesty in the vote on a referendum in Scotland deciding whether to remain a part of the United Kingdom or become an independent nation.
With a history of tension, distrust, and even violent opposition on both sides, there is concern in both Edinburgh and Westminster that deception and unfairness may lead to skewed or untrue results in the vote set for September 18, 2014.
It has always been the position of the United States to support free, democratic, and fair elections, and to always support the right of any state or country to determine its ow destiny. Though Scotland is not a nation filled with the sort of violence seen in many other foreign nations, Scots are entitled to the same.
