A pressing, rapidly growing, yet little known, phenomenon in the US is that of Grandparents raising (24/7) grandchildren. Two of the most common problems that lead to grandparents assuming care for these children are addiction/substance abuse, often with prison time involved, and/or mental illness of the biological parents(s)
Nearly 1 million children are living in homes where the grandparent is the householder and neither parent is present in the home.
Frequently, the grandparents raising grandchildren (GRGs), many of who are retired and on fixed incomes, do so with no additional financial support. GRGs face long and expensive legal battles to residue their grandchildren from abusive situations and to gain legal custody. The creation of programs that are accessible are needed NOW
