Big-money mining giants are proposing the creation of Pebble Mine, which would become one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines and largest toxic open-pit mines, at the ecologically pristine Bristol Bay in southwest, Alaska. A recent environmental study has called this mining project “catastrophic”, saying it would devastate the existing salmon runs, environment and local people. Bristol Bay currently supports a $500 million annual commercial fishing industry and 14,000 jobs. The proposed mining project would be located in a seismically active region, where thousands of rivers and streams could be compromised. We need to stand together as Americans as future generations of people and wildlife depend on us to protect their most important legacy -- our natural resources.
