The Iraq war has ended. There is no good excuse for opposing homecoming parades and other celebrations anywhere in the country. Troops are still at war in Afghanistan, and we should have similar welcome-home events for them when that is over.
I speak as a Vietnam veteran who felt shunned for many years afterward. No one who joined the armed forces of this country should be made to feel that he or she should deserve less respect because of opposition to a political decision.
Our troops serve our nation as a whole, and don't ask which political party is in power. They deserve our respect and a parade when they return home, especially as such parades demonstrate even more respect for those who didn't return, and as a reminder of our obligation to those who returned damaged.
