Healthy Start is the only available resource many clients in Robeson County, North Carolina have. A rural community with no public transportation and little to no access to health care for new mothers and their children, we are experiencing deep poverty and excruciating rates of unemployment in addition to compounding negative social factors like; poor mental health, domestic violence, drug abuse and STDs. Our infant mortality rate (13.6) is nearly double that of the state's (7.9). We serve citizens that others cannot even reach. Our clients have few if any social supports and often feel helpless when trying to have their needs met, so to cut their only access to care would be the same as denying them the rights and privileges of life itself. HR 541 will save programs like Healthy Start.
