There are a number of important reasons for our foreign policy position to place importance on ensuring that historically Kurdish lands are being self-governed by the Kurdish people.
- The Kurds are the largest ethnic minority in the world without a nation of their own. They deserve, in the least, a high degree of local autonomy.
- Outside of Israel, the Kurds are the most pro-US, friendly group in the Middle East. In our recent years of war in Iraq, the Kurds to the north have been steadfast in their support.
- Turkey, a NATO ally, presently seeks to diminish any chance of stronger Kurdish autonomy. We must firmly address Turkish aggression and make it clear that we support the Kurds.
- A free, prosperous, stable Kurdish region would be a trusted ally and trade partner for the US.
