Educators in the US are grossly underpaid for the job they are given. This makes education undesirable encouraging the brightest citizens into other occupations. We must encourage more capable individuals to take on the responsibility of shaping our children and our future.
Students incur a total cost(tuition, lost wages, other expenses) of 255,000 just to become a teacher. The average teachers salary is about 53,000 and about 34,000 starting out. This means that a teacher doesn't break even until more than 13 years of teaching even more when interest on loans is factored in.
So at the age of 18 the brightest Americans are asked would you like to spend the next 18 years making no more than if you worked at a factory? Many for the sake of their own futures and families decide not to.
