The drinking age in the United States is a strange anomaly compared with other Western nations. Nearly all Western nations throughout the world have a standard drinking age at 18. This age is the generally supported age of adulthood so why is it that we do not allow adult citizens the right to drink?
The drinking age wasn't always at 21. Before the 1980s, many states had a drinking age set at 18, but since then states were forced to adopt the 21 age limit or risk losing highway funds.
21 is an arbitrary and random age; a limit that has come out of medieval England. In that society, boys were considered men at 21 because that was the age when they were generally able to wear heavy armor.
21 is a random age and everybody adult deserves the right to have a drink.
