Vermont's recent law making companies label their products if they contain genetically engineered ingredients is having a nationwide impact on food labels. Yet many of the reasons given for these labels also apply to MMOs. MMOs are crops that have had their DNA altered by being subjected to chemicals and radiation to produce traits that could never evolve through nature.
MMOs are patented by large chemical companies.
MMOs are made to withstand applications of herbicides even more toxic than glyphosate.
MMO safety claims are based solely on the word of large corporations, as the government does not require any evidence of safety.
The bottom line is: without labeling, consumers are completely in the dark. The FDA can label MMO foods.
