400,000 patients are transported by air ambulance annually. For many of these patients, the skills of the flight crew and the time to definitive care is the difference between life and death or life-altering disability. Sadly, since the inception of air medical transport nearly 400 pilots, nurses, paramedics and physicians have been killed in medevac crashes. Despite the excellent training of the flight crews, fatal crashes occur on a far too regular basis. A national safety stand down day, a 24 hour period in which all medevac programs, including physicians, hospital administrators and first responders complete mandatory safety training will save lives! During a safety stand down, ground units will complete all transports, as if the flight request was turned down due to poor weather.
