The Palestinian move for a "non-state" UN membership at the United Nations General Assembly is essential for the Middle East and for global progress. This will allow Palestine to be on a more equal footing with Israel when negotiating for a two-state solution. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said at the Cairo-based Arab League that he will press ahead with a bid for the United Nations to recognise Palestine as an observing state, adding that he is ready to start negotiations with Israel afterwards. The non-state UN membership will allow Palestine to deal with Israel directly at the United Nations and Abbas has repeatedly pledged to do so. Note that "non-state" is not state recognition so there is room for negotiations, in fact more than enough to negotiate the conflict.
